ABOUT

Laura Pasek

A little bit about me: I am a long-time educator, writer, and park enthusiast. I have lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2012. I live here with my funny and adventurous family. Every year, we look forward to the FoolMoon luminary parade and other special events in Ann Arbor. I am most proud of completing the Visit Every Park challenge in the summer of 2020. One sunny Saturday, I hopped on my bike and went to more than 20 parks. All I got was a lousy T-shirt.

My passion for writing began in high school, when I took an elective literature class called “Sci-Fi Lit.” My first crack at writing was a novel about a shero named Ziro Tuhiro who lived in the post-apocalyptic mega city Londis (London/Paris). She discovered some nefarious schemes happening in the depths of the Crevice that lies between the two parts of the city. Sadly, this story was lost when my computer died, and with it, any possibility of shining a light on the conspiracies of the Crevice.

I pursued my degree in journalism, and spent several years writing for The Jerusalem Post, Silicon Valley Community Newspapers, National Geographic School Publishing, and McGraw-Hill.

As I transitioned into education, I brought my passions to writing instruction for my students. I’ve served as the faculty advisor for student-run newspapers, and published e-books with students on Kindle Direct Publishing.

My passion in education is in finding authentic writing projects, such as participating in real-world story contests and publications. Several of my students won awards and recognitions for the stories. An election simulation we ran in 2016 garnered national attention as a fun and positive way to learn about elections.

These days, I spend my time writing interesting stories about local events or lesser-known Jewish history. I also write about passions such as environmentalism and thrift store shopping. I co-authored a middle grades novel with a former student based on a class project.
